The Real Ghostbusters: initial reactions

Here's a question I'm surprised hasn't been asked before, for those of you who saw the movie on its initial release, and caught RGB later on: what were your reactions to the cartoon? Were they positive, or negative?

Were you distracted by the different character designs, or the multicoloured jumpsuits? Or perhaps by Slimer being good, and being friends of the guys? What about Peter sounding like Garfield? Were you impressed by the new baddies, like Samhaine and the Bogeyman, and how did they stack up to Gozer in your mind? Things like that?

An enquiring mind wants to know….

I was about 3 or 4 when I first watched Ghostbusters. I was born in 86. I had several of the toys including the Ecto 2. I liked it a lot. I wasn't as much a fan of the movies as a kid as I was the cartoon. It wasn't till I was older that I really liked the movies.

I thought the designs were typical ‘80’s “radical”, but could have cared less, as I loved Ghostbusters, and was thrilled to have a TV show about them.

I've watched a lot of episodes as a kid, but could understand any of it

I was about 5 years old and only spoke French… But I didn't really care : There was lots of action and it FELT like the movie.

A couple of years after (around the time ‘Slimer And The Real Ghostbusters’ came out), a French TV station started playing the French version of the cartoon.

I remember thinking that I had as much fun watching it in English as in French, since most of the jokes were physical and the storylines were pretty self-explanatory. So I continued to watch both versions.

Now that I think about it, I think this is the reason why I started watching more and more US TV shows and started to learn English by myself.

I can safely say that watching RGB is my fondest Saturday-Morning kid memory

Aaaaaafter these messages…….. We'll be rightttttt back.

The first seasons tone and writing wise have really held up well.

The later episodes when it got all Slimer-centric didn't do it for me then, and I'm afraid to see what I'd think now in some ways.

The first 2 seasons were great. The 3rd was alright. By season 4 it started going downhill. Some episodes were alright but most were extremely cheesy and ridiculous. My Mom bought me the a pirated version of the series back in Christmas of 08. I think I got to the end of season 5 on those and then decided to skip to the last season and I hated it. My favorite episode from season 5 is Elementary my dear Winston. I liked Sherlock Holmes.

It's quite possibly the best episode from Season 5, although the first nine episodes are the best of that season.

By the way my all time favorite episode is Lost and Foundry. I guess my signature kind of gives that away.

Thanks to the cartoon, my dad introduced me to the movie which he had taped off of ABC.

I loved the jokes and the stories, this show was probably the first television show that I watched continuously even with the changes in the writing over the years. I was pretty sad when it was canceled, thought my video taped copies of various episodes and the comic book series helped me through this period. Many times as a child from 1986-1993, I watched the show on tv, played with the toys, and read the comic book series from NOW comics. The Real Ghostbusters was a big part of my childhood. I loved talking about it, and pretending to be the Ghostbusters with my friends. I even dressed up as Peter Venkman for Halloween from about 1987-1990.

Looking back now as grown man, it was very happy time in my life, that I am glad I can enjoy again thanks to Time life releasing the show on DVD.
