I have some great news!
For those of you that don't know, since the beginning of the year I have been trying to contact Shuki Levy in order to conduct an email interview with him. Shuki Levy was the one who composed the music for The Real Ghostbusters. His music was one of the major strengths of the show and was one of the things that made it so great.
Anyway, last week I sent another email to the webmaster at his website and today I received a response, and it's a positive one. The man himself has been nice enough to take the time to answer all of my questions.
Here's the full unedited interview:
Shuki Levy & The Real Ghostbusters
1. How did you get the job of creating the music for The Real Ghostbusters?
DIC sought my help as a composer. I had composed shows for them in the past and they enjoyed my music, so it seemed a natural fit.2. Had you already seen the Ghostbusters film and what did you think of it?
I had scene the film prior to working on the series, and enjoyed it (like most of America). ☺ 3. The movie contains some great pop songs including Ray Parker Juniors popular theme tune and a terrific score by Elmer Bernstein. Were you at all influenced by the films music when composing the music for the show?
I tried to remain faithful to the feel of the original film score, but I made it my own by putting a younger spin on it. 4. Did DIC animation show you a promo, episodes of the show or any artwork before you began working on the music in order for you to gain an idea of what they wanted from you?
I was always given the script and shown the animation before I began composingÂ
in other words, I composed to picture. The music organically evolved from what I saw happening in an episode.5. Could you please explain the process you went through in order to create the music for the show?
I think that last question explained it. I will add that once the show had been running for a while, I put the music cues IÂd created into a Âbank for the show. They were able to re-use certain cues in new scenes where appropriate, though I was still called upon to produce original music for most episodes.6. Approximately how many pieces of music did you compose for the show?
A lot! I canÂt even give you an approximate number, though, it was many years ago.7. What type of equipment did you use to create the music for the show and which studio did you make the recordings at?
I did most of the music on a synthesizer keyboard at a small studio in Studio City, CA. I supplemented the music with live instruments, like electric guitar and vocals, from time to time.8. Around how long were you working on the score music for The Real Ghostbusters?
6-7 weeks.9. The end credits to the show list both you and your long time friend Haim Saban. What part did he play in the creation of the music?
Haim Saban was often co-credited as a composer on Saban projects. However, Haim never did any of the actual composingÂhe handled the business aspect of the music, and I handled the creative.10. Are there any pieces of music which didnÂt make it to the show?
Generally speaking, all of the music I composed made it onto the show. I canÂt remember an instance where a piece was rejected.11. Did you get any feedback from DIC animation while you were working on the music and what were they like to work with overall?
Animation was usually done by the time I was brought in to score an episode, so I didnÂt have to work directly with the animators.12. Did you ever watch the cartoon and what did you think of it?
I really enjoyed working on The Real Ghostbusters. The movie Ghostbusters was such a fun concept, so it was great to be a part of the animated version.13. Saban owns a publishing catalogue of music from many shows. Does Saban also own the music which you created for The Real Ghostbusters? If not, who owns it and do you have any of the recordings in your possession?
I am not sure who currently owns the publishing for The Real Ghostbusters. Unfortunately, I donÂt have music from every show in my archivesÂ
I have composed so much music over the years, it would be impossible to keep the score for every show I ever did. If I do run across any recordings from The Real Ghostbusters, IÂll be sure to pass them along to my webmaster to post on my site.14. The score music which you recorded for The Real Ghostbusters is very much sought after by the fans and we all feel that it is a great shame that it has never been made available.
An online petition has been created asking for its release at the link below:
http://www.petitiononline.com/rgbmusic/petition.html Will it ever be released on CD or available via download, perhaps on iTunes?
Unfortunately I do not own the rights to the music. The production company who currently owns the show would also own the right to release it. 15. I donÂt know if you are aware but Time Life have officially announced that they are currently producing the complete collection of The Real Ghostbusters on DVD which will also contain a wealth of bonus material.
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Real-Ghostbusters-Details-Confirmed/10021 It would be great if the music which you composed could make it to the DVD as part of this bonus material giving users the option to listen to each of the pieces in their entirety. Is there any way that your music could be released to Time Life so that they can use it as bonus material for the DVD?
Again, I do not own the rights to the music, so I have no say in whether or not it will be released on the DVD.
16. What is your overriding memory of scoring the music for The Real Ghostbusters and how do you feel about the music you created?
Every show IÂve composed holds a special place in my heart. I had fun working on The Real Ghostbusters.17. What are you working on at the moment?
I am currently composing a musical called ÂImagine This, which will open in LondonÂs West End at the New London Theatre on November 19. The website is www.imaginethisthemusical.com, if youÂre interested in reading more about it. I also just directed a new family film called ÂAussie and Ted.ÂOn behalf of the entire Ghostbusters fan community I thank you very much for taking part in this interview. I wish you every success in your current projects and the very best of luck for the future.
Thank you, I appreciate your interest in my music.
