Okay, update. Three months ago the webmaster (Tori) at Shuki Levy.com asked me to send the interview questions for Shuki Levy in three months time as he was busy at that point in time. It is now three months down the line and I have just done sent the interview questions again.

Here are the interview questions which I sent:

1. How did you get the job of creating the music for The Real Ghostbusters?

2. Had you already seen the Ghostbusters film and what did you think of it?

3. The movie contains some great pop songs including Ray Parker Juniors popular theme tune and a terrific score by Elmer Bernstein. Were you at all influenced by the films music when composing the music for the show?

4. Did DIC animation show you a promo, episodes of the show or any artwork before you began working on the music in order for you to gain an idea of what they wanted from you?

5. Could you please explain the process you went through in order to create the music for the show?

6. Approximately how many pieces of music did you compose for the show?

7. What type of equipment did you use to create the music for the show and which studio did you make the recordings at?

8. Around how long were you working on the score music for The Real Ghostbusters?

9. The end credits to the show list both you and your long time friend Haim Saban. What part did he play in the creation of the music?

10. Are there any pieces of music which didn’t make it to the show?

11. Did you get any feedback from DIC animation while you were working on the music and what were they like to work with overall?

12. Did you ever watch the cartoon and what did you think of it?

13. Saban owns a publishing catalogue of music from many shows. Does Saban also own the music which you created for The Real Ghostbusters? If not, who owns it and do you have any of the recordings in your possession?

14. The score music which you recorded for The Real Ghostbusters is very much sought after by the fans and we all feel that it is a great shame that it has never been made available.
An online petition has been created asking for its release at the link below:

http://www.petitiononline.com/rgbmusic/petition.html

Will it ever be released on CD or available via download, perhaps on iTunes?

15. I don’t know if you are aware but Time Life have officially announced that they are currently producing the complete collection of The Real Ghostbusters on DVD which will also contain a wealth of bonus material.

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Real-Ghostbusters-Details-Confirmed/10021

It would be great if the music which you composed could make it to the DVD as part of this bonus material giving users the option to listen to each of the pieces in their entirety. Is there any way that your music could be released to Time Life so that they can use it as bonus material for the DVD?

16. What is your overriding memory of scoring the music for The Real Ghostbusters and how do you feel about the music you created?

17. What are you working on at the moment?

On behalf of the entire Ghostbusters fan community I thank you very much for taking part in this interview. I wish you every success in your current projects and the very best of luck for the future.

I think I've basically covered everything on The Real Ghostbusters. I'm now crossing my fingers for a response from the man himself.

I also want to make Shuki well aware of the DVD collection that Time Life are currently working on. It would be great if Time Life were to purchase Levys music for bonus material on the DVD. This is a perfect opportunity and perhaps the only opportunity we'll ever have of getting Levys music released. Being able to listen to every individual track with no other sound and in it's entitety would be amazing. Perhaps they could even put all of his music on a CD and have it as part of the package. I also want to somehow contact the producers of the DVD at Time Life particularly Andy Mangels to inform them about Levys music, the demand for it and what a great extra it would make for their DVD. I hear that Mangels will be at the Comic Con so if any of you are going there please find him and convince him that Levys music needs to be put on the DVD.

Great, I've just done a search and found his website:

http://www.andymangels.com/

There's also a contact email address so I am going to email him and notify him about Levys music.

UPDATE

I've just emailed Andy with the message below:

Hi Andy

I’m a huge fan of the DVDs which you’ve worked on in the past and I own most of them.

When it was announced that you would be working on Time Life’s collection of The Real Ghostbusters on DVD I was very happy indeed.

I am a huge Ghostbusters fan and just like all the other fans of the franchise I have been waiting a long time for a release such as this.

I am emailing you because I would like to talk about the music which Shuki Levy created for the show. A while back I created a petition to try to get his music released.

http://www.petitiononline.com/rgbmusic/petition.html

Shuki Levy created some outstanding music for the show which is one of the major reasons it was so great. I’m pretty sure that the music is now owned by Saban Music group.

http://www.saban.com/html/music.html

I have tried to contact them to ask them if they indeed have Shuki Levy’s music and whether it will ever be released but I cannot find an email address.

I have also tried to contact Shuki Levy at webmaster@shukilevy.com because I want to do an online interview with him. His webmaster (Tori) said that she would pass the questions to him so things are looking promising.

I want to find out exactly where his recordings are and if there is any possibility of his music being released. I have also informed him of the DVD collection that Time Life are currently producing so that hopefully the people who own his music (which I’m pretty certain is Saban) can perhaps release it to Time Life so that it can be added to the DVD as bonus material.

As I said, the music which he created was terrific and really added to the quality of the show and it would be amazing if it could be added to the DVD package as bonus material, perhaps having all the tracks on a separate CD or simply added to one of the DVD disks.

I was wondering if you have any plans of interviewing Levy for the DVD or getting hold of his music as bonus material. I think that it is well worth looking into and would really add to the quality of DVD.

Here are a few email addresses and links where you can contact Mr Levy on:

webmaster@shukilevy.com

info@shukilevyproductions.com

tamara@shukilevyproductions.com

http://www.linkedin.com/in/shukilevy

Levy’s music is probably in storage at Saban Music Group just gathering dust. I think that if Time Life or you yourself approached Saban they would release it to you.

I know that you put a lot of effort and care into making quality DVDs and I think this music would be a fine addition. I would be so appreciative if you could pursue this.

Fingers crossed! Andy is probably our best bet of getting Levys music released. Hopefully something good will happen of this.

UPDATE

I've already received a response from Andy!

Matthew -

Thanks for your interest. I have had no contact with Shuki Levy or Haim Saban, as they would not respond to questions back when I was working on He-Man.

I cannot say whether or not we WILL have musical material on The Real Ghostbusters yet, as we have not made any announcements. However, I am aware, as is the company, that the fans would like to hear some Music & Effects alternate tracks on the DVDs if at all possible. We'll have to see what the future holds!

It's unfortunate that Andy had no luck contacting Shuki Levy or Haim Saban. However there is another avenue which is Teri Nelson Carpenter.

I've informed him of this so hopefully something good will happen.

I have some great news!

For those of you that don't know, since the beginning of the year I have been trying to contact Shuki Levy in order to conduct an email interview with him. Shuki Levy was the one who composed the music for The Real Ghostbusters. His music was one of the major strengths of the show and was one of the things that made it so great.

Anyway, last week I sent another email to the webmaster at his website and today I received a response, and it's a positive one. The man himself has been nice enough to take the time to answer all of my questions.

Here's the full unedited interview:

Shuki Levy & The Real Ghostbusters

1. How did you get the job of creating the music for The Real Ghostbusters?

DIC sought my help as a composer. I had composed shows for them in the past and they enjoyed my music, so it seemed a natural fit.

2. Had you already seen the Ghostbusters film and what did you think of it?

I had scene the film prior to working on the series, and enjoyed it (like most of America). ☺

3. The movie contains some great pop songs including Ray Parker Juniors popular theme tune and a terrific score by Elmer Bernstein. Were you at all influenced by the films music when composing the music for the show?

I tried to remain faithful to the feel of the original film score, but I made it my own by putting a younger spin on it.

4. Did DIC animation show you a promo, episodes of the show or any artwork before you began working on the music in order for you to gain an idea of what they wanted from you?

I was always given the script and shown the animation before I began composing… in other words, I composed to picture. The music organically evolved from what I saw happening in an episode.

5. Could you please explain the process you went through in order to create the music for the show?

I think that last question explained it. I will add that once the show had been running for a while, I put the music cues I’d created into a “bank” for the show. They were able to re-use certain cues in new scenes where appropriate, though I was still called upon to produce original music for most episodes.

6. Approximately how many pieces of music did you compose for the show?

A lot! I can’t even give you an approximate number, though, it was many years ago.

7. What type of equipment did you use to create the music for the show and which studio did you make the recordings at?

I did most of the music on a synthesizer keyboard at a small studio in Studio City, CA. I supplemented the music with live instruments, like electric guitar and vocals, from time to time.

8. Around how long were you working on the score music for The Real Ghostbusters?

6-7 weeks.

9. The end credits to the show list both you and your long time friend Haim Saban. What part did he play in the creation of the music?

Haim Saban was often co-credited as a composer on Saban projects. However, Haim never did any of the actual composing—he handled the business aspect of the music, and I handled the creative.

10. Are there any pieces of music which didn’t make it to the show?

Generally speaking, all of the music I composed made it onto the show. I can’t remember an instance where a piece was rejected.

11. Did you get any feedback from DIC animation while you were working on the music and what were they like to work with overall?

Animation was usually done by the time I was brought in to score an episode, so I didn’t have to work directly with the animators.

12. Did you ever watch the cartoon and what did you think of it?

I really enjoyed working on The Real Ghostbusters. The movie Ghostbusters was such a fun concept, so it was great to be a part of the animated version.

13. Saban owns a publishing catalogue of music from many shows. Does Saban also own the music which you created for The Real Ghostbusters? If not, who owns it and do you have any of the recordings in your possession?

I am not sure who currently owns the publishing for The Real Ghostbusters. Unfortunately, I don’t have music from every show in my archives… I have composed so much music over the years, it would be impossible to keep the score for every show I ever did. If I do run across any recordings from The Real Ghostbusters, I’ll be sure to pass them along to my webmaster to post on my site.

Unfortunately I do not own the rights to the music. The production company who currently owns the show would also own the right to release it.

Again, I do not own the rights to the music, so I have no say in whether or not it will be released on the DVD.

16. What is your overriding memory of scoring the music for The Real Ghostbusters and how do you feel about the music you created?

Every show I’ve composed holds a special place in my heart. I had fun working on The Real Ghostbusters.

17. What are you working on at the moment?

I am currently composing a musical called “Imagine This,” which will open in London’s West End at the New London Theatre on November 19. The website is www.imaginethisthemusical.com, if you’re interested in reading more about it. I also just directed a new family film called “Aussie and Ted.”

On behalf of the entire Ghostbusters fan community I thank you very much for taking part in this interview. I wish you every success in your current projects and the very best of luck for the future.

Thank you, I appreciate your interest in my music.

If it's really the case that since Sony owns the show, they'd also own the music, then has there been anymore news about this? Will Time Life be including any of the music on the set?

Whatever happens, great job on being so persistent about this, Matthew. I'm glad to see that you at least got the man himself to answer your questions.

Well, the petition has been up for just over a year now and it only has 114 signatures. It's a little disappointing to be honest. With all the fans that are out there I would have thought that far more people would want this to happen. I was hoping for at least 300 by now. Perhaps it's just a case of not enough people knowing about the petition. It is afterall something you'll only come across if you're specifically looking for it or happen to stumple across the link that I've posted on various threads.

But with that out of the way we now of course have Time Life recently released dvd collection of The Real Ghostbusters. As most of you will know, the dvd has some of Shuki Levys music tracks included on it however this is only some of them. Plus the ones that are on the dvd still include the sound effects from the episodes which the tracks were taken from. It is of course better than nothing but it could potentially be so much better.

I know I'm not the only one who still wants an officially released score album of the show. If you have read this thread you will know that last year I interviewed Shuki levy about his music and the possibility of getting his music released. He said that unfortunately he does not have it in his possession.

When I heard that Time Life were releasing their collection of The Real Ghostbusters I immediately emailed Andy Mangels. I realised that this was a great opportunity to get hold of Levys music. I told him about the petition, the demand for the music, about the fact that I had spoken to Levy and that he should contact Saban Music Group to find out if aquiring Levys music would be possible. He wisely made no promises and what we have on the dvd is of course what we get.

I can only think of one more possibility. Ever since I began trying to get Levys music released I have not once been able to contact Saban, who seem to be the holders of the music. Unfortunately, their website has no contact information whatsoever.

http://www.saban.com/html/music.html

Luckily enough though I have been able to find their address and telephone number on Google Earth. Their business is located in two locations which are in close proximaty to one another.

The first:

10100 Santa Monica Blvd # 2600
Los Angeles, CA 90067, United States
(310) 557-5100

The second:

10100 Santa Monica Blvd # 2600
Los Angeles, CA 90067, United States
(310) 557-5100

Now that I have found these addresses what I am going to do is send them a letter. I will tell them that there is a demand for Levys music by the fans and ask them if there is any possibility of a future release. However to improve the chances of getting hold of this music I am now asking for help.

Firstly, I would like anyone who can telephone them to give them a call in relation to this. I live on the other side of the world so it is incredibly expensive for me to do it.

Secondly, if there's anyone who happens to live in the area they could pay them a visit and enquire about this music.

The person who you will need to speak to with regards to this is Teri Nelson Carpenter. She is the senior vice president of Saban Music Group.

http://www.saban.com/html/team/carpenter.html

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have just received the following email from Andy Mangels.

Matthew -

I appreciate your interest and passion. However, I have ZERO influence with the people who control this music. They weren't interested in returning my calls for the DVD set, and as far as I know, could care less who I am.

I included the M&E tracks on teh DVD sets specifically because I know people want the music; that is the extent of any help I can be.

Good luck though!

This is disappointing and I am rather annoyed with Saban for ignoring Andys calls. Saban have possession of Shuki Levys music. They've had it for years. These recordings are doing nothing but lying in a storage room somewhere. This music has never been used since Saban aquired it and it probably never will. There is absolutely no reason why Saban couldn't hand Shuki Levys recordings over to Andy. The Time Life DVD collection would have been even more amazing had all of Shuki levys musical cues been added to it. It could have perhaps been added to the set on a seperate disk rather like the bonus disk was. Saban could have even made a little money out of it so it just doesn't make any sence.

In spite of this I intend on pressing on with trying to obtain this music. I am sending Saban a letter. If I do not recieve any kind of response I will keep om sending them. I would encourage you to do the same. I would also encourage anyone reading this to give them a call (their number is displayed above). I think that the more demand they see for this the more likely they are to take it seriously.
