There's a movie I've always wanted to see and probably never will get to.

Anybody ever seen the Japanese version of King Kong Vs. Godzilla? It's not available in the U.S. I've always wanted to see it since Godzilla wins in that one. But that's all I know about it. I guess there is the possibility of getting a bootlegged copy of it. But I haven't had much luck with those.

That is actually a common misconception dealing with the ambiguity of the ending of the film. As far as Toho is concerned, the winner of the Japanese version of the film was King Kong. This was confirmed in an official Toho publication “Toho Films Vol. 8” published in 1963

As far as a copy of it. I actually remember seeing the Japanese version (I assume it was at least as it had Japanese characters on it and had the listed language as romanized Nihongo) at a Big Lots years years ago

::edit::

I have been told by one of my friends that the misconception of a ending with Godzilla winning is actually a result of an inaccurate statement in Spacemen Magazine…not the ambiguity of the ending. My bad.

Speakin as a ginormous Godzilla Fan, you can find bootleg versions of the Japanese version. Although the ending isn't too different (the only true difference is that you hear Godzilla roar as Kong is swimming away) the film itself is light-years better then the American slaughtering of the film. It has one of Akira Ifukube's best scores which was completely deleted from the America film. If you are a Godzilla fan, you should try and get a copy. I know a good supplier who sells copies of the Toho released DVD's. PM me if you'd like the link.

So there's no chance of it being released here in the US?

The chances of the Japanese version being released are slim to none.

That of course doesn't mean don't look for it. You'd be surprised what you can and will find.

You can see if someone is selling it on Ebay.
