I always assumed that they were compairing the DNA of the sample to that of the known wildlife of the area and then moving on from there…

Well there's 3 ways of doing it. #1 is what you just said. The second is they compare it to human DNA and the last is where they compare it to known primate DNA.

The other two is what I meant when I said “Moving on from there”. But if they were going to be efficent, I am sure they compared it to Primate and Humans first.

Yea. But from what the article says, it seems like the sample was contaminated as they got two matches. Human and Possum, apparently.
