As it weren't obvious enough, I completely agree
Watch both movies, they are timeless and seem in a place all their own. Harold Ramis said it best in the commentary for the first movie when the guys investigate the symmetrical book stacking “there's something timeless about the lighting, wardrobe etc” Chances are with a third movie, you will get nothing remotely similar to that feeling. I'm not saying a GB3 would ruin the other two movies but think about how you felt about SW:The Phantom Menace when it came out. Err something like that.
If they barely got Bill Murray to do GB2, why would you wanna see him halfa$$ his way through this one? Could you enjoy it, knowing he didn't really even want to make it for the longest time and finally gave in? Talking about the script, Dan Aykroyd says “Even Bill Murray said he would work a few days on it.” WTF? Granted it says he doesn't appear until the end in a memorable gag it's obvious Dan probably wrote the script thinking “hey maybe Bill will agree to be in it if I sort of write him out of it” I really wish castewar would reveal all with the script
The new crew sounds a lot like EGB which I know many people here didn't even care for. Think about it. I know Harold Ramis would rework many of the ideas but if the focus is mainly on a new ‘politically correct’ team, is this sounding familiar yet?
This new crew includes: Franky, a body-pierced, tough New Jersey punker; Lovell, a dread-locked dude; Moira, a pretty but uptight gymnast and science grad; and Carla, a Latino beauty. There's also Nat, a prepubescent genius whose powerful brain has made his head abnormally large. Despite his youth, Nat serves as a supervisor for the new GBs. That's all we ever get to know about these characters (we don't even learn their last names!) and they're our guides throughout most of the story. There's no real conflict between them nor is there a dominant personality as there was amongst the original GBs. These would be the script's worst mistakes if it weren't for the revelation that these young turks aren't especially funny or charming, either.May 25, 2001 “Well, there's a reason Bill won't agree. Someone once didn't agree with him. Now he doesn't agree with someone. Listen, Bill is a friend of mine and just because he doesn't want to explore this concept is no reason to impair our friendship. He wants to move on to new work and new things. I can't blame him.”
Dan Aykroyd knowing Bill Murray has had relatively little interest in the idea of a 3rd movie wants to push for another one still? I know Dan wants to see his vision fulfilled but I really don't care to see it if it has to go through all this legal stuff and “please please just spend a few days, I wrote your part small, you won't have to appear much” and all this and that for years and years. During the opening of the movie, all that would have to enter my mind. If everybody isn't fully 100% behind it, why bother? Do you want a GB movie with little or no Venkman?
I'm perfectly satisfied with two movies. Maybe GB was just meant to be a pair of movies. I don't want to know how bad GB3 could have been because honestly I believe the chances of it being anything close to the feeling you get watching the first two, is less likely with each passing day. Unlike fine wines, GB3 is not going to get better with age.
Like Don says, there's so much other stuff that has a chance of being great and is a more realistic goal than trying to force the actors and people involved into something they have no real interest in. It was an important part in their lives and careers and I respect their decisions to move onto other things. If everyone involved on the first two doesn't see it as being neccessary, why will people continue to want it? Dan Aykroyd is a fun loving guy, similar to Ray Stantz. He is a childish guy who loves his franchises/characters and wants to have fun doing another GB movie. Much like Blues Brothers 2000. He doesn't see it the way we do and may be oblivious to some things. All I'm saying is why drag the good name of Ghostbusters through the mud again if we don't have to? It really sounds like many people want a third just for the sake of having one. All I'm saying is lets set our sights on something that is obtainable and is likely to be much better.
ADDITION I just want people to give logical and legitimate reasons why it will be made or why it should be made. Not reasons like “oh it will be made eventually”, “it has to be made because other movies have”, “that's the movie business”, “Bill will come around” As far as I'm concerned, EGB was GB3. That does it for me. I have no desire to see ANOTHER new team go at it. I don't want GB3 to be done a certain way because that's the only way Dan could make Bill agree. I'd rather have no GB3 then a GB3 for all the wrong reasons, if it would be made just to have the project done. In many ways it sounds like Dan wants to do the movie just so he can do it now. Like BB2000. I hate to sound so against a third movie, but everyone on this board has their time of “coming around” and realizing exactly why it probably shouldn't be made. Everybody likes to hope and dream but there's a time when everyone will eventually find their way back to reality.
I really like Dan Aykroyd, he is a great guy and has been in many of my favorite movies of all time and has a passion for what he does. He's a funny guy but it may be hard to see the possible damage the movie could cause when he has absolutely his heart set on it. I don't think he completely understands how much it could tarnish the Ghostbusters name(which I know he doesn't want to do). I know he wants GB fans to be entertained again so his intentions are good but I think it'd be best to leave it alone and go with what we have which is two brilliantly classic films.
YES I would much rather shoot for a rerelease of the first movie in theaters for the 20th anniversary. That will open up plenty of doors for merchandise. I think Dan Aykroyd and company should get behind a HUGE rerelease of the first film. A way to get more people into what Ghostbusters is all about instead of possibly alienating potential fans with a new movie that would scare them away from checking out the originals. From what I've read, the focus will no doubt be mainly on the new team. We all know, no one can top the original four guys so why try? Venkman, Stantz, Spengler and Zeddemore or Carla, Franky, Lovell and Moira?
