Isn't it illegal for them to sell ahead of time? I just thought it might, and well, even SkankerZero doesn't have the game yet, or at least isn't playing it as I have him a friend on that site so its probably reviewers, though I'm beginning to doubt even that now that even more people have it apparently.

It's not illegal to break street date. If you get caught, at least if you work at a dedicated retail store instead of a mega store that can dodge those kinds of rules, you get fired and the store gets a hefty fine for every game that can be proven as sold before street date.

Wal-Marts, Targets, even most Best Buys have -up to now- been immune from this because most of their employees are undertrained and think if the object is in the store that means it can be sold. And no one will report them except other stores that have to follow the street date rule.

Clearly, the game has gone gold (yay!) but I'd bet that most copies are leaked from the dev house or are review copies getting passed around. Though, in answer to the implied question, I wouldn't mind losing my lame job to play Ghostbusters early

Is it 1 hefty fine or a hefty fine per item sold. I was always under the assumption they got fined X amount per item that was sold before the street date

I have been told many different things depending on which store I am at, but the most common consensus seems to be about $2000 per item sold before street date. I know that SOUNDS too high, but remember, it's largely a scare tactic.

Of course, I never looked into it myself too closely. When I first learned about this I was still afraid of getting fired.

The whole point of having a high fine like that is to deter the behavior from happening in the first place.

As a gamestop employee I can tell you thats exactly what is happening, we have it but cant sell it until monday at midnight. however that doesnt stop the managers from taking it home to play and then sell it as our opened last copy.. I personally am waiting for monday because I have to. (*peter)

They probably work at GameStop, took the game home to play, and will bring it back and sell it as new!

I always disliked the fact that Gamestop employee's could “rent” new games to their employee's and then turn right around and sell that “rented” game as a brand “new” title…despite the fact that it is technically used.

Thats happened to me 2/3 of the last few times trying to buy shit from there. One time a “new” copy with a generic gamestop box.
