My choice for any ‘update’, would be to go the videogame route, a Ecto-1 with 1A livery (but with the classic logo) and with a toned down roof-rack, similar to the original. A good mix of elements from both movies that remains practical.

That would be cool. Perhaps also, rather than old oscilloscopes etc inside the car, they'd use a modernised computer system instead?

No reason not to, the 1A did have a computer installed in the rear compartment.

Actually, now that I think about it a acceptable path would be taking the EGB Ecto-1 and conceive it for the movie? I happen to really like the style of it and how they modernised it from scratch for the series. Plus the all around row bars where pretty impressive and decient to add to the overall look of the vehicle.

If they don't use the original Ecto-1 in GB3, they at least need to retire it in a dignified manner.
