What do you want in the comic?

Well, as a newbie it is my solemn duty to bring up at least one dead thread (even if it's only been inactive for a few days), so…I'll pick this one, because I have something to say for it.

I'm lookin' forward to the comics…which is something of a rarity as I don't usually care for them. Anyway, what I'm looking for in this comic:

Winston
Not kidding. Winston didn't get enough air-time in either movie, and he often gets left behind in fanfic. So I want Winstonage, preferably a mix of the Winston no one got to see from GB (the military trained, over-qualified for the job Winston) and RGB “hearding cats” keeping the science goons on Earth Winston. Fortunately I know there will be some, as the comic's home site states there will be a Winston arc very early on in the run.

Egon and Janine
I realize this is a controversial subject. But regardless, it's canon for the first GB that something was going on. The DVD commentary had one telling point in it that makes this all the more true–we all know that Harold Ramis thought the idea was pretty well revolting (I looked up mawkish), but he said something else which may seem unrelated…that he played Egon as never smiling throuought the whole film. Which he didn't, except for once or twice some expression that could be called a smile, and one time he completely so did not follow that rule. By the time it happened the DVD commentary was over so the other two commentators couldn't say anything…it was in the credits. Egon smiled nice and bright when Janine hugged him at the end. So whether yon writer/actor likes it or not, it got slipped in as canon by his very own self. Therefore, I want to see something on the subject in the comics. What they do with it is up to them, but at first there should be be some sort of relationship because it was in the first movie. (GB2 proved at least that movie Egon isn't unfamiliar with women just interested in his anatomy…then again, he also seemed to have loosened up significantly, go figure.)

Not a lot of Slimer
Just…not a lot. A little, but not a lot. And no Deux ex Machina for him.

If there must be Louis…
…Then make him totally first movie Louis. A source of comedy just because he has a terrible knack for getting himself into minor stupid predicaments like locking himself out of his room or by getting shoved aside when he was just as much part of the action as Dana.

Etcetera
I'd like to see the characters be a mix of their GB and RGB selves…some leaning more one way than the other. I'd like Peter to be straight down the middle–game show host who does have a heart in there somewhere, and “Mrs. Faversham's Attic” Peter. Well, of course I'd like the art to look good… And I would like there to be somewhat short story arcs, stuff that doesn't last a hundred issues. That's for the growing underlying story…

There. Now I'm done reviving old threads. Carry on.

Toygeek
I'm sure he'll probably show up at some point…but you wouldn't want them to burn out early into the series, would you? I'd rather see the boogieman show up a little later, after we've settled into the GB world that 88MPH is creating for us.

That way, when he shakes things up (and this is the boogieman, how can he NOT “shake things up”?), it has a little more resonance.

That's how I wanted it to be. :-)

Artemis, I agree 100% with everything you said.

And about Egon and Janine. I don't think we have to worry about them being “split” like they were in GB II. Their love IS indeed Core Canon, and it would be one of the “smallest details” of the first movie. We were promised that the Comic would be strictly based on the original movie all the way down the the “smallest details” (With a few elements from RGB.). So fear not, Egon & Janine Shippers, because that's the way it will be. Janine will still be chasing Egon, and Egon will still love her under that thick cranium of his (He's just too shy to tell her, but maybe sometime down the road he might have no choice but to… ).

Plus, the majority of the Ghostheads are Egon & Janine Shippers, so why would 88mph Studios let us down? How many times have you actually heard someone say that Janine should marry Louis or that someone deserves Egon more than her, instead of saying that Egon and Janine belong together? I don't recall too many. So the point is that the following thing is Core Canon, and it WILL happen:

EGON AND JANINE FOREVER!!! TO INFINITY AND BEYOND…

Thank you Doctor

I'll hedge and only claim semi-shippership for E/J…and point out that there were five years in between GB and GB2, and that IIRC, neither were in the same scene in GB2. So over five years, something coulda happened, (like Egon could have finally had a chance to drill that hole in his head he always wanted if the comic heads toward GB2 being part of their universe in the form we know it. (Although strictly GB speaking, Egon didn't look like he had that thick of a head; it's RGB Egon who needed a good whack with a clue-by-four!)

But it's good to hear that they'll be paying attention to such small details. I am curious though–does that mean paying attention to things that were not filmed or where cut from the film? For instance, in the DVD's storyboards, Winston was on the Slimer bust and basically took over because he had more training…and Egon had absolutely horrible aim. There was also mention made that Winston was vastly over-qualified for ghostbusting in terms of practicals. I'm curious about that because it established Winston's military training and also established him as the lightning-rod for the scientists…it would certainly enrich his starting character far more than the film allowed.

Meh heh…Looking forward to this more now than ever…smallest details include Egon with a tendency to throttle people with whom he's angry and Peter with some form of medical training that allows him to administer perscription drugs…

Okay, sorry Fritz. It's just too fun. I couldn't resist. :-) :p

I may be wrong, but I saw that Storyboard on the DVD, and it was actually Peter! The reason why so many of us thought he was Winston, was because Richard Pryor was actually a candidate for Venkman earlier. That storyboard was in the shooting script, and Peter was the one in it, and not Winston. But that might not be true. It may have been Winston. Either that, or it was (As Fritz would say. :-) ) some guy in tan who kinda looked like Richard Pryor.

Actually, the reason I know it was Winston was because there was script text accompanying the storyboards and Winston was the one saying stuff that Peter eventually said (calling out orders on where to stand, getting slimed, etc). I just checked and the storyboards I'm talking about have all four GBs in them. Would be another reason to think it was Winston

What do I want so see? quite simply: the Military . This has bugged me for a while. Why hasen't the Armed Forced tried to get some info on the guys equipment? I mean portable nuclear accelerators that can do THAT much damage must intrest the goverment as a new weapon or something. Hell, I think it would be cool if they had an entire 3 issue arc on just this subject with Peck (this would be a cool way to introduce him) showing some Army colonel how much use this equipment can be and what private citizens can do with it. So then Peck kinda screws the Ghostbusters with lawyers for the military showing up every ten seconds or so. I think that would give Venkman some great one-liners as well as being a cool arc in general.

Oooo. Military snooping around the equipment and finding out how they were allowed to run around with unliscenced nuclear accelerators would be most interesting. Perhaps liscences were invented for them? That could lead to interesting trouble with the government wanting outrageously high permits and such.

(::ahem:: Egon would fall for whomever he happens to fall for…strikes me as the type that doesn't have a type…)

:-O Well, the old debate has returned (err..one of them anyway), and I have to speak up in defense of EgonsBabe, EgonsGirl, and all the other Ghostheads out there who are NOT E/J shippers INCLUDING myself. Why is it so difficult for you guys to even consider the fact that Egon might end up with another woman besides Janine? Or for that matter he might not end up with any woman at all, who knows… True the comic will take place in the time following GB1, but why does that automatically make Egon and Janine a couple? If the comic is being written from a MOVIE point-of-view who knows what might've happened? Egon could've very easily given her the royal brush-off right after that huggy scene at the end of the movie (yuck!!), and hooked up with one of ladies the GBs “danced the night away” with after busting the nightclub ghost (per Casey Kasem's voice-over during the montage scene). See, Egon could end up with any woman, it doesn't have to be Janine!! And as far as saying anything but E/J is STUPID, well.. that's just an OPINION. And my opinion is that he can do MUCH BETTER than Janine. There's my unsolicited two cents……
