Excerpted from my first post on the matter in the “It's Coming!” thread…
1) I'm going majorly against the grain here, I think, but I prefer the RGB apperances to “four guys in tan who kinda look like Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis, and Hudson”. Similarly, characterization-wise, Egon and Winston were improved mightily by the cartoon.
Well, the appearance issue has been decided. But as you can guess by my avatar, I'm okay with that. But RGB brougth a wealth of backstory and characterization that I hope will not be totally ignored
2) Why aren't I hearing more about the most important character after the four Ghostbusters themselves, namely Janine? She's the only one after the four guys who's important in every iteration (Dana wasn't in the cartoon, Slimer wasn't important, really, in the movies, Louis came in too late to RGB to make a difference. Plus he's irritating). GB1 and Season One are the ways to go with this firey lady–just please don't get too trendy on her appearance, like April in the new TMNT (bare midriff and bell-bottoms? Not very scientific…) Mini-skirts and loud jewelry, sure, but if she looks anything like Brittny Spears I'll start throwing things.
Or throwing up. This character was badly abused post-JMS, including by her own creators (GB2)
3) On a related note, DON'T SCREW EGON AND JANINE UP THIS TIME!!! No single thing could probably get me to drop the Revival quicker than watching her suck face with Louis Tully or Ray or, well, anybody but Egon.
I still don't bend on this one. No Janine and Louis. No Egon and Mary Sue. And as far as Egon's family goes…I bet they didn't approve of his friendship with Peter Venkman, either, and that didn't stop him
4) Vices like smoking and drinking beer? I could handle it. Ray is clearly a chain smoker in GB1, and he, Winston, and Venkman all chug beer at various times. (Egon does not smoke or drink. I could see Janine drinking beer, but not smoking) But it may provoke too much of a PC crapstorm for Red to want to deal with, and I'd understand.
5) Equipment malfunctions? I DO like that idea. Remembering that Ray and Egon build the stuff in their garage, it makes perfect sense for it to not be the almost 100% reliable it was in the movies and RGB.
6) Dana Barrett? I'm torn. Having her around makes it harder to have Venkman hit on every woman that moves, a source of great comedy…but I always looked at her as the secret pain under Venkman's smirk, and it'd be interesting to see him maybe be happy this time.
At least mention her. The fact that she wasn't even once was a major oversight on RGB's part
7) Louis Tully. After GB2 and the grating, peanut-headed character in RGB, my first instinct is to keep this loser as far away as possible. If he does show up, I'll be watching him very very closely (see point number 3)
I've softened on this one a little…but his abilities and his role in the company just don't provide much easy opportunity for any significant panel time.
8) Slimer. He was at his best in early RGB, as a sort of gluttonous pet that pissed off Venkman. Use him sparingly. If he starts talking coherently and saving the Ghostbusters butts every episode/issue, we have a big problem.
Well, we know we don't have to worry much about that. But he'll still be Slimer to me no matter what they call him
9) Villains. As some have already commented, I think, one of RGB's weaknesses was a lack of recurring menaces. Shifty, powerful demons who send threats out over several episodes/issues instead of just popping up in one story. Certainly, HUMAN villains can't be dealt with just by throwing them into the Containment Unit. Have Walter Peck continually harrass the Ghostbusters and generate bad press. NOW's RGB comic came up with a great character, necromancer Nathaniel Blaque, who could've returned to scheme and plot against our heroes. You get the picture.
The GBI role playing game had Peck be put in charge of a consumer advocacy group, the Fraud Squad; a reincarnation of that idea could be perfect. Just don't make him as laughable as he was in “Big Trouble With Little Slimer”. He was actually a menace in the movie, remember?
