What was that white stuff on the traps?

Hey everyone, I haven't been on here for a while, so first of all, HI!

Second, forgive me if this has been answered but recently I've watched GB again on a big screen and I noticed something that I have wondered. What is that white stuff liquid on the trap covers?

If you watch closely enough, whenever Ray is holding a trap there seems to be this white goo near the trap doors (you can see this clearly when Ray first inducts Winston and hands him the traps).

I don't know if anyone had an explanation to it, but my theory is that it's ectoplasm from the ghost being sucked in, and it's hardened and crusted from the overheating of the trap.

I dunno. Thoughts?

It's a chemical strip. It's what's generating the smoke coming from the trap (i.e. part of a special effect that the audience wasn't supposed to notice).(*peter)

Really? I thought they would've put that inside. But you see it quite clearly.. Oh well.

I'm sure they tried that at first, but it probably didn't give the effect the exact look they were going for.

I don't doubt that it was special effects stuff. It's just like in the hall when the proton beam is streaming down the wall, and some of the flashing falls and dangles across the wall.
