Wood is honestly the best material to make a suitable pack from. In fact there is living proof that wood can makes a spectacular pack! Its cheap, you get plenty when bought, and it can be molded into almost anything; Oh and it wont melt when its painted wink

Visit this link to see a proton pack built all from wood:

Oh and one more thing you can see pics of my pack, which is being built from wood, that is still under construction. Looks fine to me

The majority of my pack is wood, and I prefer it that way. It's heavier than some other materials you can use but I think it's also a lot more durable. I'm considering building a second pack from styrene plastic signs, like Paranorman suggests in his plans, to use when I know I'll have it on a long time but I'll probably still use my wood one the most.

Sugar pine is one of the lightest woods to use. Pretty cheap too. I'm using 1/2“ for all the boxes as well as building up to 3” for the synchronous gernator. As long as you keep the components as hollow as possible and avoid solid pieces (except the gun mount block), you'll probably weigh in at about 25 lbs. at the most. smile
