Are they any good? Are they movie canon, or animated canon? And, is each series basically in the same continuity as the series before it, or are they all stand alone “in their own continuity”-type things?

I'm thinking of picking them up, but only if it's actually an ongoing series, but they're releasing them as mini-series that are all connected, even if it's only loosely.

Oh, and what year are they supposed to take place in? There's no retconning going on, like they did with Legion having the movie taking place in 2004, and completely ignoring the second movie. Right?

they are not intertwined, they are each their own one-off or stand alone story

they are movie-canon in they mention Gozer & Vigo from time to time even having Gozer's father wreak havoc in the time travelling 4-parter.

And no, I don't think your decision seems to make much sense in ongoing vs. miniseries.

The series is not ongoing. They are releasing miniseries and one-shots, most of which so far have been very good, and I would recommend picking up.

You don't need it to be an ongoing series for it to be worthwhile.

No, they aren't. But they're still enjoyable. They don't build off of each other, but they are still strong stories.
