Would a re-release of both the movies generate a box office smash?

What do you people think? If it did then do you reckon the 3rd installment would be green lit?

I think that the re-releases would be hits because there is a new generation that haven't seen the movies yet.
But Bill, who owns owns one third of the rights to the franchise, didn't really even want to do a second film and doesn't intend to do a third. But, then again, if the re-releases come out and he sees how much he enjoyed doing the original GB movies, he might give in and let GB3 be made.
I know that Dan already stated that GB3's dead, but hey, it's a possibility.

It depends on how they do it. If there is the underlined promise that Ghostbusters 3 will be coming out, then rereleasing the first two would generate alot of interest. There is one major thing to worry about though. Right now, You have several big movies in the Sifi catagory milking the market on a regular basis. First, you have “The Lord of the Rings”. A classic trilogy which is also going to draw a hugh following for their promise of 3 movies, one every christmas for the next three years. Then, you have star wars, A monsterous trilogy, with the same age group apeal as ghost busters, promising 3 prequels over the next several years. Two smaller ones are also in the mix. There's “matrix 2” and “MIB 2”. Both well made first movies hoping to bring in good numbers with sequels. If ghostbusters were to try it, they would be jumping on the bandwagon, in a sense. It wouldn't be a problem, But they would have alot of sifi movies to contend with. It would all have to come down to when they would release ghostbusters 3 and when they would rerelease the first two. If they do the timeing right, I definatly think they could pull it off.

Don't forget the Harry Potter series. Warner Bros. already has rights to make movies out of the first four books, and the second one will be coming out in November of next year. That could also prove to be a problem for GB3.

true, but harry Potter doesn't exactly fit into the same age bracket as the other movies, Potter is for a slightly younger group. Although it would still pose some compition, if for nothing else but theater space.

Yes, a re-release of both GB1 & GB2 (if at the right time) would do extremely well and would be a great way to introduce the new generation of moviegoers to GB. Then GB3 may finally see the light of day…

Not at all, they should rerelease the first one at the beginning of the summer. Then, rerelease the second at the middle or end of the summer. And then, release ghostbusters three either in November or like January or Feb.

I would defently re-release the first one. This would be profitable because the cost would be very low. It would probably do well. I do not think I would re-release GB2 if I were planning to make GB3. The people who like GB but not as much as we do may became tired of it and not see GB3. If I was sony and wanted to make a qucik buck I would re-release both GB and GB2. The first one in the begging of summer and the last one in early fall. There would be no expenses so the profit would be huge
